Cerros De Mavecure in a Few Words

The rocks of the Guiana Shield, located between Guyana, Brazil and Venezuela and classified among the oldest on the planet (about three billion years old) extend westward into Colombian territory forming the tepuis of the jungle.

Three of these tepuis, also called Inselbera or island-mountains by scientists, are located on the banks of the Inírida River about three hours upstream from the capital of Guarnía.

El Mono, El Pájaro and Mavecuri are the names of these three hills of black granite rock oxidized by the rain and scarce vegetation, when not completely bare, that stand isolated in the jungle like watchtowers in the immensity of the greenery.
When the traveler goes up the Inírida and sees three superb trellises appear on the horizon, he is unfailingly enthusiastic.

The river passes between them, leaving two on one side and one on the other. The highest one reaches 250 meters. From its summit, splendid viewpoint of the jungle, you can observe the limitless tapestry of the mangrove following the trajectory of the river since it insinuates itself in the horizon until it is lost in the direction of Venezuela.

Two indigenous villages of puinaves watch over the three imposing tepuis: El Remanso at the entrance and El Venado at the exit.

The cerros de Mavecuri, as they are known, have become the symbol of the young department of Guainía. Legend has it that the princess Inírida (in whose honor stands a monument in the main park of Puerto Inírida) is locked up in them and purges a sorrow of love and at night she can sometimes be heard crying. Armadillos lurk on the summits of the hills and the king of the gallinules nests in the nearby forests; the Inírida flower, beautiful, strange, pointed, is the characteristic plant element of the area.

How to get to Cerros de Mavecure ?

To get to the Cerros de Mavecure independently (without a tour), you can arrive at the port on the river bank of Puerto Inírida and to get a round trip boat (a little cheaper than a tour), although the best option for you to have no setbacks is to join a tour group.

There are some activities you can enjoy in the Cerro de Mavicure such as camping, climbing the Cerros de Mavecure (amazing view) and the top of Cerro Diablo.
