Situation et moyens d'accès

The Dientes de Navarino circuit is a trekking route located near Puerto Williams, on Navarino Island in Far Southern Chile. The trailhead begins approximately 3 kilometers from the town center, accessible via a marked path from the road leading to the Cerro Bandera viewpoint. Puerto Williams itself is reachable by air from Punta Arenas (flight duration: about 1.5 hours) or by ferry from Ushuaia, Argentina (journey time: around 12 hours).

Heures d'ouverture et billets

The circuit is open year-round, with no formal operating hours or entrance fees. However, independent trekking is at your own risk, and registration with local authorities (such as the Chilean police or CONAF) is recommended before departure.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The ideal trekking window is from December to March, during the Southern Hemisphere summer, when temperatures are milder and daylight hours are extended. Winter months (June–September) bring heavy snow and extreme conditions, making the route hazardous for all but experienced mountaineers.

Durée de la visite

The full circuit typically takes 4 to 5 days to complete, covering roughly 53 kilometers. Shorter day hikes are possible for those seeking a less demanding experience.

Activités

  • Trekking through rugged landscapes with panoramic views of the Dientes de Navarino peaks.
  • Wildlife spotting, including condors, foxes, and native bird species.
  • Photography of pristine sub-Antarctic forests, glacial lakes, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Installations

There are no facilities along the trail. Puerto Williams offers limited services, including basic supplies, guesthouses, and a small hospital. Camping is permitted along the route, but visitors must carry all necessary equipment and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Ce qu'il faut apporter/vêtir

  • Sturdy hiking boots and layered clothing for unpredictable weather.
  • Windproof and waterproof gear, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Sufficient food, water purification tools, and a reliable camping stove.
  • Detailed topographic maps and a compass or GPS device—trail markers are sparse.

Règles et règlements

  • Open fires are prohibited; use camping stoves only.
  • Respect private property and avoid straying from the designated path.
  • Pack out all waste, including biodegradable items.
