Emplacement et comment s'y rendre

Chicabal Lake is a sacred crater lake located within the Chicabal Volcano Natural Reserve, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Quetzaltenango (Xela) in Guatemala's Western Highlands. The lake sits at an elevation of around 2,700 meters, surrounded by cloud forest.

  • From Xela: Take a microbus or colectivo toward San Martín Sacatepéquez (also called San Martín Chile Verde). From there, arrange a pickup truck (camioneta) or hike approximately 1.5–2 hours to the trailhead leading to the lake.
  • Guided tours from Xela often include transportation and are recommended for first-time visitors due to the remote location.

Heures d'ouverture et billets

The reserve is generally open daily from sunrise to sunset, though access may be restricted during certain Maya ceremonies.

  • Entrance fee: Approximately Q25–Q50 (subject to change), payable at the trailhead or visitor center.
  • No advance tickets required.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The dry season (November–April) offers clearer trails and better visibility of the lake. Early mornings are ideal to avoid afternoon fog and crowds. The lake is particularly mystical during the rainy season (May–October), though trails may be muddy.
