Situation et moyens d'accès

Huascarán National Park is situated in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range of Northern Peru, near the city of Huaraz. The park spans the Ancash region, with its main entrances accessible from towns like Yungay and Carhuaz. The nearest major hub is Huaraz, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of the park's boundaries.

  • From Huaraz: Most visitors arrange transportation via private tours, taxis, or colectivos (shared minivans) to key trailheads like Llanganuco or Pastoruri. The journey takes 1.5–3 hours depending on the destination within the park.
  • Public Transport: Buses and colectivos run from Huaraz to towns like Yungay, where onward transport to park entrances can be negotiated.

Heures d'ouverture et billets

The park is open year-round, but access to certain areas may be restricted during the rainy season (December–March).

  • Entrance Fees: Foreign adults typically pay PEN 30 (approx. $8 USD), while Peruvian residents and children receive discounts. Tickets are purchased at park control points or the park office in Huaraz.
  • Guides: Mandatory for some treks (e.g., Huascarán summit); independent hiking is permitted in designated zones.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The dry season (May–September) offers optimal conditions for trekking, with clear skies and stable temperatures. Early mornings are ideal for photography, as the light accentuates the glacial peaks. Crowds peak in July–August.

Durée de la visite

Day trips are possible for shorter hikes or scenic drives, but multi-day treks (e.g., Santa Cruz, 4–5 days) are the park’s highlight. Allocate at least a full day to explore key sites like Laguna 69 or Pastoruri Glacier.

Activités

  • Trekking: Routes range from day hikes (Laguna Churup) to challenging climbs (Huascarán summit, 6,768m).
  • Wildlife Watching: Spot Andean condors, vicuñas, and spectacled bears in their natural habitat.
  • Photography: The turquoise lagoons (e.g., Llanganuco) and snow-capped peaks provide stunning vistas.

Installations

Facilities are minimal within the park. Basic restrooms exist at popular trailheads, but no cafes or shops. Huaraz offers accommodations, gear rentals, and supplies.

  • Accessibility: Limited; rugged terrain suits able-bodied visitors. Pastoruri Glacier has a paved path but is at high altitude (5,000m).
  • Parking: Available at main entrances for a small fee.

Ce qu'il faut apporter

  • Layered clothing for rapid weather changes (temperatures drop below freezing at night).
  • Sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle.
  • Altitude sickness medication (many trails exceed 4,000m).
