Emplacement et comment s'y rendre

The Paso Trapesio Huayhuash Circuit is a high-altitude trekking route in the Cordillera Huayhuash, near Tarma in Central Peru. The circuit does not have a precise address, as it traverses remote mountainous terrain. The nearest major hub is Huaraz, approximately 6-7 hours by road from Tarma. From Huaraz, visitors typically arrange guided tours or private transport to the trailhead at Cuartelwain or Llamac.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The ideal trekking season is during the dry months from May to September, when trails are more accessible and skies are clear. Early mornings offer the best light for photography, with fewer crowds in May and June compared to peak months of July and August.

Durée de la visite et activités

The full circuit takes 8-12 days to complete, depending on pace and acclimatization. Key activities include:

  • High-altitude trekking with passes exceeding 5,000 meters
  • Wildlife spotting (Andean condors, vicuñas)
  • Photography of glacial lakes like Laguna Jahuacocha
  • Cultural interactions with local Quechua communities

Ce qu'il faut apporter et porter

  • Sturdy hiking boots and layered clothing for variable conditions
  • High-altitude gear (sleeping bag rated below -10°C, trekking poles)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hat for intense UV exposure
  • Water purification tablets or filtration system

Facilities & Regulations

Facilities are minimal along the route. Some villages offer basic supplies, but visitors should be self-sufficient. Camping is permitted in designated areas with Leave No Trace principles. A Huayhuash Trekking Ticket (approximately 220 PEN) is required, obtainable in Llamac or through tour operators.
