Valle del Arco Iris, or Rainbow Valley, is located approximately 25 kilometers southwest of San Pedro de Atacama in Northern Chile. The valley is part of the Cordillera de la Sal mountain range, accessible via a dirt road. Most visitors arrive by guided tour or rented vehicle.

  • By Tour: Many local operators in San Pedro de Atacama offer half-day tours, often combined with nearby attractions like Valle de la Luna.
  • By Car: A 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to rough terrain. Follow Route B-245 southwest from San Pedro, then take the turnoff marked for Valle del Arco Iris.

The valley is open daily from sunrise to sunset. No formal entrance gates exist, but access may require payment if entering via private land (approx. 5,000 CLP per person). Tickets are purchased on-site; no advance booking is needed.

Early morning or late afternoon offers the most striking views of the mineral-streaked hills, as the sunlight enhances the colors. Avoid midday heat (October–March), when temperatures exceed 30°C (86°F).

Plan for 1–2 hours to explore the valley’s main viewpoints and short walking trails. Activities include:

  • Photographing the vibrant sedimentary layers (ochres, greens, and whites).

No facilities are available on-site. Bring water, sun protection, and snacks. The nearest restrooms and cafes are in San Pedro de Atacama.
