Situation et moyens d'accès

Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl, is the highest peak in Mexico, located on the border between the states of Puebla and Veracruz. While Cholula serves as a nearby cultural hub, the mountain itself is approximately 120 kilometers southeast of Puebla city. The most common base for climbers is the town of Tlachichuca, from where 4x4 vehicles can be arranged to reach the mountain's refuges.

  • By Car: From Puebla, take Highway 150D toward Orizaba, then follow signs to Tlachichuca. The journey takes roughly 2.5 hours.
  • By Public Transport: Buses run from Puebla to Tlachichuca, but onward travel to the mountain requires private arrangements.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The ideal climbing season runs from November to March, when the weather is driest and the snowpack is stable. Early mornings offer the clearest views. Note that summit attempts require careful planning due to altitude and weather conditions.

Activités

Pico de Orizaba is primarily a destination for mountaineering and high-altitude trekking. The standard route, the Jamapa Glacier, is a challenging but non-technical climb suitable for experienced hikers with proper acclimatization.

  • Summit climbs typically take 2 days, with an overnight stay at Piedra Grande refuge (4,300m).
  • Lower elevation hikes are available in surrounding national parks for those not attempting the summit.

Ce qu'il faut apporter

  • High-altitude mountaineering gear (crampons, ice axe, helmet)
  • Layered clothing for extreme temperature variations
  • Sun protection (glacier glasses, high SPF sunscreen)
  • Plenty of water and high-energy snacks
  • Basic first aid and altitude sickness medication

Installations

Basic mountain refuges provide shelter but no services. Tlachichuca offers simple accommodations and equipment rental shops. There are no visitor facilities on the mountain itself - all supplies must be carried.

Safety Considerations

Altitude sickness is a serious risk. Proper acclimatization (2-3 days at intermediate elevations) is essential. Climbing without a guide is only recommended for experienced mountaineers. Weather conditions can change rapidly.
