Essentials

Hotels and Lodges in Rural Areas

Accommodation in Patagonia is notoriously expensive and generally falls into three categories:

  • Luxury Hotels: These high-end establishments often feature premium amenities such as fine dining restaurants, spas, and heated pools.
  • Budget Lodges & Guesthouses: These include locally-run hostels and guesthouses, offering a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Staying in these accommodations provides a great opportunity to connect with locals and gain deeper insights into the region.
  • Dormitories: Basic shared accommodations, often found in hostels, providing a more affordable lodging option for travelers.

Storing Luggage in El Calafate: Since we will be staying at the same hotel during our time in El Calafate, you will have the option to leave some of your belongings there. This will allow you to travel lighter for the rest of the trip.

Camping in Patagonia

General Rules

  • Open fires are strictly prohibited in Los Glaciares National Park (Northern sector).
  • Camping in Los Glaciares National Park (Northern Sector – El Chaltén)
  • The park offers several campsites, each providing a unique perspective of the breathtaking mountain landscapes.

As of late 2024, camping within Los Glaciares National Park is now subject to a fee of $15 USD / €15 per night, and 45€ of entrance fee per person and per day. Reservations must be made in advance. Due to the park’s popularity, it is highly recommended to book your spot early, as some campsites fill up quickly.

  • There are no showers or facilities available at Los Glaciares North part campsites (near El Chaltén)
  • Each campsite has only one basic dry toilet, which is very rudimentary.

Camping at Sodexo – Torres Del Paine National Park

In Torres Del Paine National Park, the Sodexo campsite, where we will be staying, is better equipped than those in the Argentinean side. Here, you will find:

  • Hot showers
  • Sinks for dishwashing
  • Charging stations for batteries and electronics

Throughout the rest of the park, camping conditions vary—some sites offer only basic amenities, while others provide more developed facilities.

By preparing accordingly, you can fully enjoy the stunning wilderness of Patagonia while ensuring a comfortable and well-organized experience.
