The key to staying comfortable (and focused on your photography) is the layering system. This allows you to adapt quickly without carrying a bulky bag.

What to Bring

Your clothing and footwear choices directly affect your ability to hike to viewpoints, wait for the perfect light, and protect your gear. Here is what matters most for this specific tour:

Layered clothing: A moisture-wicking base layer, a mid-layer (fleece or light insulation), and a windproof outer layer. You will be adding and removing layers throughout the day.
Waterproof jacket and trousers: Essential. Even on a sunny forecast, mountain mist or an unexpected shower can soak you quickly. A waterproof shell protects both you and your camera bag.
Sturdy hiking boots with good grip: The best photo locations often require walking on uneven, wet, or rocky trails. Choose boots with deep tread (Vibram-style soles) and ankle support. Trail runners are not sufficient for the slippery levada paths.
Hat and sunscreen: The sun at Madeira’s altitude is intense, even when the air feels cool. A wide-brimmed hat protects your face and neck, and high-SPF sunscreen is non-negotiable for long outdoor days.

Note: Avoid cotton in your base layers. It stays wet and cold, which can ruin a long shoot. Pack synthetic or merino wool instead.

Camera & Lenses: A versatile zoom lens (like a 24-105mm) is perfect for most situations. Also consider a wide-angle lens for grand landscapes and a telephoto lens if you’re interested in details on distant cliffs or flora.
Sturdy Tripod: Essential for capturing the silky smooth motion of waterfalls on the levada trails and for sharp sunrise/sunset shots from the peaks.
Filters:
- A Circular Polarizer (CPL) is a must-have. It will cut glare from wet foliage and water, dramatically deepening the greens of the forest and the blues of the ocean.
- Neutral Density (ND) filters are perfect for creating long-exposure effects with the island’s countless waterfalls.
Drone: The dramatic coastline and mountains are incredible from the air. A drone can capture stunning perspectives, especially at locations like Ponta de São Lourenço or the black sand beach of Seixal. (Note: Always check and respect local drone regulations before flying).
Camera Water Protection: To capture the magical, moody atmosphere of places like the Fanal forest, you’ll likely be shooting in mist or light rain. A good rain sleeve for your camera and plenty of microfiber cloths to wipe water droplets off your lens are absolutely essential.
Gear Protection: A waterproof camera bag or a reliable rain cover for your existing bag is critical. The weather can turn in an instant.

Summary: Packing for Madeira is all about preparing for its famous microclimates. You can experience warm sunshine, cool mountain air, mist, and rain all in a single day. A smart layering system and protection for your gear are the keys to a comfortable and successful trip.

The Essential Layering System (Clothing):

Base Layer: Lightweight, moisture-wicking t-shirts or long-sleeved tops.
Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or a light-to-mid-weight insulated jacket. This is your core warmth layer for cooler altitudes or evenings.
Outer Shell: A lightweight, fully waterproof, and windproof jacket. This is non-negotiable for protection against sudden mountain showers and wind on the peaks.
Pants: Comfortable hiking pants (quick-dry material is ideal). Consider bringing a pair of waterproof pants to pull over them if heavy rain is forecast.

Footwear for Trail and Town:

Hiking Boots: Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and excellent grip are essential for the often-uneven and sometimes slippery levada trails.
Comfortable Shoes: A second pair of comfortable sneakers or sandals for exploring Funchal and relaxing in the evenings.

Essential Hiking & Day-Trip Gear:

Headlamp or Flashlight: An absolute must! Many levada trails pass through dark, unlit tunnels that can be several hundred meters long.
Daypack: A comfortable backpack (20-30L) to carry your layers, water, snacks, and gear.
Trekking Poles: Highly recommended to save your knees on the steep ascents and descents and for added stability on wet paths.
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated. The mountain water is generally safe to drink, but a filter bottle is a good precaution.
Sun Protection: Sunglasses, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. The sun can be strong, even when it feels cool.

Uncovering Colombia’s Magic with Tristan

The Magical Mystery Tour!

In March 2026, I ventured out of my comfort zone and booked an 11 day photography tour with Tristan, through Remote Expeditions.
It was amazing. Truly remote, we visited several indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada, first to meet them and find out a little about their way of life and second lay to photograph them. Additionally there were several opportunities for photographing birds, landscape and City Scenes in Cartagena.
We were fortunate enough to to be a small group, of two , which I was more that happy to pay a premium for. This gave us an intimate experience with the people we met along the way, additionally the 1:1 attention to our personal interests in photography was incredible.
Tristan was a real treat! He has spent the last 10 years living in and exploring this region of Colombia. He has cultivated relationships with the indigenous peoples of the area, and loves to share his understanding of their culture with you.

He structured the tour perfectly. He was organized, knowledgeable (about the land, its people and photography), compassionate, passionate and eager to share his vast internal encyclopedic information with you. When he didn’t know, he would quickly get you the information.
The remote places you get to, by 4x4, hiking and boating are exceptional. You could never find these places on your own.
Knowing little about Colombia, I was initially a little hesitant to take this tour. Having just returned, I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond.
What ever type of tour you take with Tristan, you won’t be disappointed. He delivered everything he he promised, and a few amazing surprises more.
