This eight-day tour is built around one of Panama’s most quietly rewarding birding bases: the Canopy Lodge in the crater valley of El Valle de Antón. From a single comfortable home at 2,400 feet, we move outward day by day — ridgeline trails and Pacific dry forest first, then full days on the coast, the Caribbean slope and the cloud forest of the continental divide. The pace is deliberately slow, with early mornings in the field, generous time at the lodge’s fruit feeders, and space to wait for light and for birds to come to us.

Arrival in El Valle de Anton
A private road transfer from Tocumen International Airport climbs into the cloud-forested hills of El Valle de Antón, arriving at Canopy Lodge, an intimate birding lodge set in the crater with fruit and nectar feeders, a streamside garden, and access to La Mesa Road and cloud forest trails. Settle into the feeders and grounds for an easy evening introduction to Panama’s birds: Crimson-backed, Blue-gray, Flame-rumped and Plain-colored Tanagers, Thick-billed Euphonias, Chestnut-headed Oropendolas, Red-legged Honeycreepers, and hummingbirds such as Rufous-tailed, Snowy-bellied and Violet-headed. Dinner is included.

Las Minas and Cara Iguana
Birding begins along the Las Minas ridgeline road, where forested mountains, grassland and small fincas open below and clear days reveal both oceans near the summit. The slow, rewarding session may bring grass-finch, tanagers, antvireo, trogons, manakins and a chance for antpitta or antthrush. After lunch, the Cara Iguana Trail explores one of the last stands of quality Pacific dry forest near El Valle, with manakin, thrush-tanager, motmots, wrens and antbirds, plus seasonal warblers. The day returns to Canopy Lodge El Valle.

Stay at Canopy Lodge El Valle, an intimate birding lodge in the crater of El Valle de Anton with fruit and nectar feeders and a streamside garden. A morning along La Mesa Road moves through secondary forest, scrubby pastures and overgrown fincas, where mixed edges bring tanagers, hummingbirds and trogons. In the afternoon, bird the scrubby roadsides of Mata Ahogado, listening for the Purplish-backed Quail-Dove and watching for Rosy Thrush-Tanager, Great Antshrike and White-ruffed Manakin. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the package.

Leaving the El Valle de Antón valley, this full-day excursion explores the Pacific Dry Forest and Santa Clara Beach, where dry forest, savanna and open coast transform the birding. Raptors such as Yellow-headed Caracara, Gray-lined, Zone-tailed and Savanna Hawks headline the day, alongside Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Fork-tailed Flycatcher and Brown-throated Parakeet. Near the shore, attention turns to shorebirds, boobies and terns. An afternoon stop at Juan Hombrón Rice Fields adds open-country species including Southern Lapwing, Glossy Ibis and Crested Caracara, before returning to Canopy Lodge El Valle.

Birding around Canopy Lodge El Valle begins with a morning climb through the cloud forest of Cerro Gaital Natural Monument, where the steep, misty trails offer Black Guan, Northern Emerald-Toucanet, Spotted Barbtail, Slaty Antwren, White Hawk, Green-crowned Brilliant and Violet-headed Hummingbird. The afternoon follows the paved Valle Chiquito road past forested woodlands and two river crossings, searching for Green Kingfisher, Sepia-capped Flycatcher, Tody Motmot, Yellow-throated Vireo, Yellow-backed Oriole, Black Hawk-Eagle and a Chestnut-headed Oropendola colony. At Río Indio, look for Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Spot-crowned Barbet, Barred Puffbird and Black-chested Jay, with White-collared and Band-rumped Swifts overhead. Hermits work the understorey while becards and antbirds appear through the family list. Lunch and dinner are included back at the lodge, an intimate base in El Valle de Anton with fruit and nectar feeders and a streamside garden.

A final morning at Canopy Lodge El Valle offers optional garden birding, with feeders and grounds drawing tanagers, motmots and hummingbirds in the early light. Breakfast is included before the return road transfer from El Valle de Anton to Tocumen International Airport, roughly three hours by road. The journey closes out the trip after time spent at the lodge and along La Mesa Road and surrounding cloud forest trails, making an easy transition back to Panama City for onward travel.

Canopy Lodge, Feeders and Local Access
The Canopy Lodge gives the tour a comfortable base within reach of El Valle’s forest, gardens and mountain roads. Lodge feeders and local birding sites make it possible to spend more time observing and less time transferring between distant reserves.
Local guides know the valley’s trails, seasonal conditions and best observation points. Their knowledge helps us adjust the day to weather and bird activity while keeping the pace relaxed and attentive.
Practical Information
Early Starts and a Patient Birding Pace
Bird activity is often strongest early, so expect dawn departures and time at feeders, forest edges and quiet trails. The days are not a race between sightings; pauses and careful listening are part of the experience.
Humidity, heat and changing weather may affect the pace. Bring water, rest when needed and let the guide adjust the day to conditions and bird activity.
Practical Conditions in El Valle
El Valle’s trails and birding sites can be humid, uneven or slippery after rain. Mobile connectivity and charging arrangements may be more limited outside the lodge, so keep essential medication and spare batteries accessible.
Light rain protection, insect protection and comfortable walking footwear are useful throughout the tour. Local conditions, rather than a fixed timetable, determine the best place to spend each morning.
Quiet Observation and Respect for Wildlife
Birds respond best to calm, unhurried observation. Minimize noise, avoid sudden movements and follow the guide’s instructions around feeders, trails and any sensitive nesting areas.
Good birding leaves the forest undisturbed. Give other visitors space, respect local communities and value the wider range of species rather than focusing only on a predicted sighting.
Clothing and Footwear for Panama
Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long sleeves for sun and insects, sturdy waterproof walking shoes and a wide-brimmed hat. A light rain jacket and a small daypack are essential in the humid mountain climate.
Keep camera equipment protected from rain and condensation, and bring spare batteries, memory cards and a simple lens cloth.
