Hikes in the Park
- Physical Level: A very good physical condition and hiking experience are required for this trip. The hikes are designed to be short (4-5 hours maximum) and avoid exhausting routes longer than 8 hours. The terrain is generally flat, with easy to moderate difficulty, and some optional ascents of 300-400 meters for stunning viewpoints. To fully enjoy, consider preparing for at least 3 months with activities like hiking, cycling, or cardio 4-5 times a week.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path Hikes: we might explore forests without trails. These hikes involve navigating dense trees and steep hillsides. GPS is helpful but imprecise in the forest. Rest assured, the standard hikes stick to well-known and frequented paths.
- Carrying Gear: In group trips, porters can carry up to 7.5 kg per person for an additional €200 per day. This service is optional and may be used 2-3 times during the trip.
- Camping Cooking: You’ll need to cook for yourself, as labor is expensive in this region. To travel light, bring a small stove and plan for simple meals like sandwiches, fruit, and instant noodles.
Accommodations in Town
Hotel prices vary greatly depending on the level of comfort you desire. Expect starting prices of €70 for a double room. Camping in Los Glaciares Park (El Chaltén and Fitz Roy) used to be free. However, from the end of 2024 they had the unfortunate idea to start charging €45 per day for entrance and an additional €15 per night for camping (which ruined the spirit of the place IMO). In Chile, camping can be even more expensive, costing over €100 per night just to pitch a tent on the W Trek, which is again way overpriced.
Transportation
Typical travel times:
- Calafate → Chaltén: 4h
- Chaltén → Calafate: 4h
- Calafate → Perito Moreno Glacier: 1.5h each way
in Chile
- Calafate → Puerto Natales: 4.5h (+2h border crossing)
- Puerto Natales → Torres del Paine: 2h
- Torres del Paine → Puerto Natales: 2h
Return flights:
- Puerto Natales → Puerto Montt: 1.5h
- Puerto Montt → Santiago: 2h
Patagonia Weather
- Best Time to Visit: Late November to early March offers mild temperatures, up to 16 hours of daylight, spring wildflowers (November), and autumn foliage (March).
- Temperatures: Summer temperatures range from 4°C to 20°C during the day, but weather is unpredictable with possible rain, sleet, or snow. Nights in March may drop below 0°C.
- Wind: Strong winds are common in Patagonia, often at 15-20 km/h but sometimes much stronger, significantly cooling the air.
Required Equipment
- Packing: Be prepared for changing weather with a layering system. A detailed packing list and video call for preparation will be provided before the trip.
- Equipment Rental: Hiking gear can be rented in El Chaltén or Puerto Natales, but costs may exceed the price of buying gear. Small gas canisters for stoves are available in El Chaltén.

Unveiling Beauty Through the Lens with Tristan
The Luminous Journeys “VIVA Colombia” trip was fantastic for photographic opportunities in a country that is still largely unexplored by travel photographers. Tristan was an enthusiastic leader offering insights into his creative approach to photographing Colombia, including its indigenous peoples. His patient and sensitive approach dealing with locals allowed participants learn and appreciate Colombia’s many diverse customs. There was a good balance between street & culture photography, nature/tropical birds, and landscapes.
In addition, Tristan’s willingness to help participants with the technical and artistic aspects of photography was greatly appreciated. Plus he’s just great fun! The trip was well organized and the hotels and food were superb. Overall, Viva Colombia! provided diverse photographic opportunities that would have broad appeal to photography enthusiasts looking for untrammeled travel adventure in a fascinating South American country.Highly recommended!
