The Classic Gringo Trail: History & Highlands

This is Peru’s most celebrated route, and for good reason. It offers a perfect introduction for first-time visitors, weaving together the nation’s colonial history, ancient Inca heartland, and the breathtaking landscapes of the high Andes. This journey is a pilgrimage through time, from cosmopolitan Lima to the mystical heights of Machu Picchu.

7-10 Day Itinerary: The Essentials

  • Days 1-2: Lima

Your journey begins in the coastal capital. After arrival, take time to acclimatize and explore the modern, cliffside districts of Miraflores and the bohemian charm of Barranco. Your itinerary includes a tour of the Historical Center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring the grand Plaza de Armas and the impressive Lima Cathedral. This is also the epicenter of Peru’s gastronomic revolution, presenting an excellent opportunity for diverse culinary experiences.

  • Days 3-4: Cusco & Sacred Valley

A short flight takes you to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Upon arrival, it is crucial to acclimatize to the high altitude (3,400m / 11,152 ft). Explore the city’s unique blend of Inca and Spanish architecture, including the temple of Koricancha and the massive stone fortress of Sacsayhuamán. A day trip into the Sacred Valley is a highlight, with visits to the vibrant Pisac market and the formidable ruins of Ollantaytambo.

  • Day 5: Machu Picchu

From Ollantaytambo, you will board a train for a scenic journey to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. From there, a bus ascends to the citadel for your guided tour of this world wonder. For more expansive views, consider hiking either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Please note that these hikes require separate tickets that must be pre-booked well in advance due to limited availability.

  • Days 6-7: Cusco & Departure

Return by train and vehicle to Cusco. Enjoy a final day at your leisure for shopping for local crafts, visiting museums, or embarking on an optional activity, such as a day trip to the remarkable Rainbow Mountain. Finally, you will fly from Cusco to Lima to connect with your flight home.

14-Day Itinerary: The Extended Journey

This itinerary builds upon the essential 7-10 day trip, venturing further south to explore the high-altitude plains of Lake Titicaca and the colonial elegance of Arequipa, framed by volcanic peaks.

  • Days 1-7: Follow the “Essentials” itinerary as detailed above.

  • Days 8-9: Puno & Lake Titicaca

Travel from Cusco to Puno by tourist bus or scenic train, crossing the vast Altiplano. The following day, you will take a full-day boat tour on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. You will visit the unique Uros floating islands, constructed entirely from totora reeds, and the traditional island of Taquile, known for its fine textiles. For a deeper cultural immersion, an overnight homestay on Amantaní Island can be arranged, offering a glimpse into the local way of life.

  • Days 10-11: Arequipa & Colca Canyon

A bus journey takes you from Puno to Arequipa, often via the town of Chivay on the edge of the Colca Canyon. An early morning start is required for the visit to Cruz del Condor, a viewpoint offering a magnificent opportunity to see majestic Andean Condors soaring on thermal updrafts. You will then have time to explore the immense beauty of the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world.

  • Days 12-14: Arequipa & Departure

Return to Arequipa, known as “The White City” for its buildings made from pale sillar volcanic rock. Explore its beautiful historic center, including the serene Santa Catalina Monastery and the bustling Plaza de Armas. From Arequipa, you will fly to Lima to connect with your international departure.

The Amazon Adventure: Jungle Immersion

Peru offers two distinct gateways to the Amazon basin, each providing a different style of experience. Your choice depends on your available time and desire for either accessible wildlife viewing or a more profound, remote journey.

3-4 Day Gateway: Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata)

Best for: Shorter trips, high chances of wildlife sightings, easy access from Cusco.

Typical Activities:

  • Stay in a comfortable jungle lodge nestled within the rainforest.
  • Embark on guided jungle treks during the day and at night to discover different species.
  • Take boat trips on the Madre de Dios River to spot caimans, capybaras, giant river otters, and various monkey species.
  • Visit clay licks, where hundreds of macaws and parrots gather in a colorful spectacle.
  • Experience the rainforest from above on canopy walks and from observation towers.

5-7 Day Deep Dive: Iquitos

Best for: A more remote and immersive experience, Amazon River cruises, feeling truly “off-the-grid.”

Typical Activities:

  • Embark on a multi-day Amazon River cruise, navigating the main river and its tributaries.
  • Stay in a remote lodge located deep within a protected reserve, such as Pacaya-Samiria.
  • Try your hand at piranha fishing with a local guide.
  • Look for and swim near the unique pink river dolphins.
  • Visit local river communities to learn about their culture and relationship with the forest.

The Northern Explorer: Beyond the Crowds

For second-time visitors or those with a keen interest in archaeology beyond the Incas, Northern Peru offers a compelling alternative. This region is home to remarkable pre-Inca civilizations and a different, yet equally stunning, range of landscapes.

7-Day Itinerary: Coastal Cultures & Ancient Cities

Focus: Moche and ChimĂş civilizations.

Route:

  • Fly from Lima to Trujillo to begin your exploration.
