Bolivia’s highlands hold an unusual concentration of superlatives that happen to be true: a capital folded into a canyon at 11,942 feet, the highest administrative capital in the world, where the air carries roughly half the oxygen of sea level; a sacred lake higher still; and a salt desert so flat and so vast that the season decides whether it glitters white or holds a perfect mirror of the sky. This eight-day journey moves through all three at a deliberate pace. It starts gently — a quiet airport pickup, an orientation over coca tea, an early night — because at this altitude, acclimatization is the first day’s real activity.

From La Paz the route arcs west across the altiplano to Lake Titicaca, with a local lunch and a lakeside stroll in Copacabana before the ferry to Isla del Sol, the legendary birthplace of the Inca, where the night is spent on the island itself. A short trek among Inca sites closes the lake chapter before the journey returns to the capital. A 60-minute flight then drops you at Uyuni for three days of 4×4 travel: the rusting train cemetery, the working salt village of Colchani, cactus-covered Incahuasi Island, sunset out on the flats, and the volcanoes, deserts, and colored lagoons of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve — the wind-carved Stone Tree, the red water of Laguna Colorada, an optional soak in thermal waters, and the surreal forms of the Dali Desert on the way back.

Internal flights compress the long southern distances, which is what makes this shape work in eight days without rushing the days themselves — though the reserve days each run roughly eight to ten hours with stops, and they earn it. Accommodation is carefully selected at each overnight stop — La Paz, Isla del Sol, Colchani, and Siloli — and the rhythm throughout favors observation over mileage. It suits travellers who like their journeys specific, unhurried, and a little rugged at the edges.

Our journeys also welcome travellers drawn to slow travel, wildlife, culture, trekking, landscapes, and genuine encounters. You can join with professional equipment, a simple camera, or just your curiosity.

Every itinerary has its own rhythm. Some journeys are gently paced, while others include long walks, trekking, uneven terrain, altitude, or substantial travel days. The practical details on each tour page explain the expected walking, terrain, altitude, distances, and overall physical level so you can decide whether the journey suits you.

Tristan designs the itineraries and personally leads many Remote Expeditions journeys. Depending on the destination and the character of the trip, trusted local guides, drivers, cultural hosts, or specialist leaders may also join part of the route. This combination gives you direct personal support alongside local knowledge.

Often, yes. Private journeys can usually be shaped around your interests, pace, and available time. Fixed group departures have a defined route and dates, but it may still be possible to arrange additional nights, private extensions, or other travel before or after the main journey.
