Explore Ecuador's Andes and Chocó on an 8-day bird photo tour, with dazzling hummingbirds and rare species.
This nine-day journey is an easy-paced photography escape into Ecuador’s Andes and Chocó cloud forest, created for small groups of no more than eight. We stay close to the birds, photographing from lodge gardens, feeders, and carefully placed hides. The focus is on intimate natural-history images: hummingbirds, tanagers, antpittas, and signature species such as the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan and Long-wattled Umbrellabird. The physical level is easy, with most sessions based at lodges and short drives between sites.
We begin at San Jorge Eco-lodge near Quito, where antpitta feeding stations and hummingbird feeders set the rhythm. After moving to San Jorge Eco-lodge Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary, we spend early mornings at an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek and afternoons photographing Empress Brilliant and Velvet-purple Coronet. Then we descend into the Chocó at San Jorge de Milpe, where the hummingbird and banana feeders attract a variety of Chocó species, and a canopy observation deck offers a chance to photograph the Long-wattled Umbrellabird. A morning hide at Balcón Tumpiki targets the Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan.
Our final full day takes us to Antisana National Park for Andean Condor and páramo bird photography, ending with a visit to a hummingbird station for Giant Hummingbird and Great Sapphirewing. Throughout the tour, we keep the pace flexible, allowing time to review images and refine techniques.

Arrive in Quito and meet your guide Tristan at the airport before transferring to San Jorge Eco-lodge. Check in, settle into your rooms and relax before a tour orientation, where Tristan outlines the itinerary and shares tips for making the most of the trip. The day closes with a welcome dinner, easing you into your Ecuador experience.

After breakfast, a short drive reaches the Antpitta Feeding Station at San Jorge Eco-lodge, where Rufous, Chestnut-crowned and possibly Chestnut-naped Antpittas may appear at close range. The gardens also attract hummingbirds, mountain tanagers and other cloud forest species. In the afternoon, photograph hummingbirds at the lodge feeders, including Sword-billed Hummingbird, trainbearers, Sparkling Violetear and Shining Sunbeam. After breakfast, transfer to San Jorge Eco-lodge Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary and settle in for an afternoon of hummingbird photography from the lodge gardens, where feeders, flowering plants and natural perches draw species such as Sword-billed Hummingbird, Booted Racket-tail and Violet-tailed Sylph. Between sessions, watch for Andean birds including Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager and Red-crested Cotinga. Breakfast precedes a transfer from Tandayapa to Balcón Tumpiki, where cloud forest bird feeders attract Chocó and Andean species and offer close photography. Meals on the Tour
The published tour inclusions list 7 lunches and 17 dinners, together with water and one cocktail before dinner. Meals are taken during the route’s hotel and ecolodge stays and are planned around early birding departures and time in the field. Transportation and Local Guides

Altitude and Terrain Challenges
The main physical challenges are altitude and uneven ground. Some outings reach high Andean elevations, while cloud-forest trails may be steep, damp or muddy.
You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking slowly on irregular paths, standing for photography and carrying your personal camera equipment. Your guide will set the pace and allow time for rests.
Weather and Light Conditions
Ecuador’s weather varies between the high Andes and the humid cloud forest. Rain can arrive quickly, so a waterproof layer and protection for your camera are useful in every season.
Early mornings usually offer the best combination of bird activity and soft light. Clouds and showers are part of the atmosphere, not an interruption to the experience.

Getting in Shape
This is a bird-photography tour rather than a demanding trek, but you will walk on uneven ground, sometimes at altitude, and spend time standing with your camera.

Field Etiquette and Hides
Bird photography works best when everyone moves quietly and gives the birds space. In hides and around feeders, follow your guide’s instructions, keep movements slow and avoid changing the setup.
Flash, playback and other equipment should only be used when your guide confirms that they are appropriate. Patience protects the birds and gives the group better photographic opportunities.
Physical Preparation
Fitness & Altitude: What to Expect
This is not a strenuous expedition, but it is an active birding tour. You will spend full days on your feet, often on uneven trails, with frequent stops for viewing. The primary physical challenge is the altitude. Several key birding sites sit above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), and you will be hiking on slopes at those elevations.
To enjoy the trip fully, focus on cardiovascular endurance rather than raw strength. You want your heart and lungs to work efficiently in thin air. Start a routine of brisk walking, jogging, or cycling 4-6 weeks before departure. Aim for sessions that keep your heart rate elevated for 30-45 minutes, three to four times a week.
Camera Gear and Protection
A camera body, a telephoto lens, spare batteries and plenty of memory are the basic requirements. A beanbag or stable support can be useful around hides and feeding stations.
Bring a rain cover or dry bag, lens cloths and a simple way to protect equipment from cloud-forest moisture. Your guide can advise on the most practical setup for each location.
Clothing and Footwear
Pack layers for cool Andean mornings, warmer forest conditions and changing weather. A waterproof jacket, quick-drying trousers and long sleeves are useful throughout the route.
Choose comfortable, broken-in footwear with good grip for damp or uneven trails. A sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are also sensible additions to your daypack.
