Mirrorless or DSLR Body: A camera with high dynamic range is preferable to handle the high-contrast light of the high altitude.
Wide-Angle Lens (14mm – 24mm): Essential for the Salinas Grandes and capturing the immense scale of the volcanic craters.
Telephoto Lens (70mm – 200mm+): Crucial for photographing elusive vicuñas and flamingos, as well as compressing the colorful layers of the mountains.

The Necessity of a Drone

To truly reveal the hidden wonders of the Puna, a drone is an indispensable tool. Many of the region’s most spectacular features, such as the labyrinthine Campo de Piedra Pómez (Pumice Stone Field) and the abstract shapes of the salt crusts, are only fully visible from an aerial perspective.

Reveal the Landscape: A drone allows you to capture the “sea of white” stone and the intricate textures of the lagoons that are impossible to appreciate from ground level.
High Altitude Performance: Ensure your drone is updated with the latest firmware for high-altitude flight, as we will be operating at 3,000 to 4,500 meters above sea level.
Spare Batteries: Cold temperatures and thin air drain batteries faster; bring at least three to four spares to ensure you don’t miss the golden hour.

The Magical Mystery Tour!

In March 2026, I ventured out of my comfort zone and booked an 11 day photography tour with Tristan, through Remote Expeditions.
It was amazing. Truly remote, we visited several indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada, first to meet them and find out a little about their way of life and second lay to photograph them. Additionally there were several opportunities for photographing birds, landscape and City Scenes in Cartagena.
We were fortunate enough to to be a small group, of two , which I was more that happy to pay a premium for. This gave us an intimate experience with the people we met along the way, additionally the 1:1 attention to our personal interests in photography was incredible.
Tristan was a real treat! He has spent the last 10 years living in and exploring this region of Colombia. He has cultivated relationships with the indigenous peoples of the area, and loves to share his understanding of their culture with you.

He structured the tour perfectly. He was organized, knowledgeable (about the land, its people and photography), compassionate, passionate and eager to share his vast internal encyclopedic information with you. When he didn’t know, he would quickly get you the information.
The remote places you get to, by 4x4, hiking and boating are exceptional. You could never find these places on your own.
Knowing little about Colombia, I was initially a little hesitant to take this tour. Having just returned, I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond.
What ever type of tour you take with Tristan, you won’t be disappointed. He delivered everything he he promised, and a few amazing surprises more.

Vehicle Requirements and Road Conditions

The majority of the routes through the Puna, including stretches of the iconic Ruta 40, consist of unpaved gravel roads known locally as ripio. These surfaces can be unpredictable, featuring washboard textures, sharp volcanic rocks, or loose stones.

High Clearance: A high-clearance 4×4 vehicle is mandatory to navigate rocky passes, steep gradients, and occasional sandy patches.
Tire Resilience: Ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-terrain tires. Sharp stones are common, and the risk of punctures is higher than on standard roads.
Spare Equipment: Always carry at least one full-sized spare tire (two are recommended), a heavy-duty jack, and basic tools, as professional mechanical assistance is often hundreds of kilometers away.

Navigating High Altitudes

The Puna de Atacama sits at an average elevation of over 3,500 meters above sea level. This thin air affects both the vehicle’s engine performance and the driver’s physical state.

Engine Power: Expect a noticeable drop in engine power and acceleration; use lower gears when ascending or descending steep mountain passes to maintain control.
Driver Well-being: High altitude can cause fatigue, headaches, or slower reaction times. Plan for shorter driving hours and allow time for acclimatization before tackling the most technical tracks.

Logistics and Communication

The Puna is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Argentina, making self-sufficiency and careful planning essential for any traveler.

Fuel Management: Gas stations are extremely rare in the highlands. Always top up your tank at every opportunity in hubs like Antofagasta de la Sierra, San Antonio de los Cobres, or Susques.
Offline Navigation: Mobile signal is virtually non-existent once you leave the main villages. Download offline GPS maps (such as Maps.me or Gaia GPS) and consider carrying a satellite communication device for emergencies.
Daylight Driving: Strictly avoid driving at night. Hazards such as roaming livestock, sudden temperature drops that can cause black ice, and difficult-to-see road washouts make nocturnal travel highly dangerous.

Salt Flats (Salares): Travelers will witness the stunning Salinas Grandes and the Salar de Arizaro, where thick crusts of salt create endless white horizons under a deep blue sky.
Volcanic Peaks: The region is home to several of the highest volcanoes on Earth, including the majestic Ojos del Salado and the Antofalla volcano, which dominate the skyline.

Geological Wonders and Lagoons

Beyond the salt and peaks, the Puna boasts strange and beautiful formations that often appear extraterrestrial. These features are a highlight for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Campo de Piedra Pómez: A massive “sea” of white pumice stone waves and blocks, sculpted by wind and volcanic eruptions over millennia.
High-Altitude Lagoons: Hidden within the arid landscape are vibrant lagoons, such as Laguna Colorada, which serve as essential habitats for Andean flamingos and other specialized wildlife.
Labyrinthine Deserts: Areas like the Desierto del Diablo feature red clay formations and jagged ridges that create a natural maze-like geography.

Climate and Environment

Due to its geography, the Puna experiences an arid, cold climate with a high thermal range. This means visitors should prepare for intense sun during the day and significant temperature drops once the sun sets. The dry air and lack of moisture contribute to the exceptional visibility and the preservation of the region’s pristine geological features.

Health and Medical

Summary: Traveling through the high-altitude deserts of the Argentinian Puna requires preparation for a unique environment. While no specialized tropical vaccinations are mandatory for this itinerary, travelers should ensure routine immunizations are current and prepare a personal medical kit for the remote conditions of the Puna.

Vaccinations and Malaria Prevention

For this specific tour, standard vaccinations are recommended to ensure a safe and healthy journey. Because the itinerary focuses on the high-altitude regions and does not include northeastern Argentina, the risk profile is significantly different from the tropical lowlands.

Malaria Risk: No anti-malarial treatment is needed for this trip. The route avoids the northeastern border zones, which are the only areas in the country considered potentially at risk.

Connectivity in the high-altitude desert is scarce. Once we leave the larger towns, you should expect to be “off the grid” for significant portions of the journey.

Mobile Coverage: Signal is generally unavailable in the vast wilderness between destinations. Local carriers like Personal or Movistar may provide basic service in larger settlements, but data speeds are often slow.
Wi-Fi Access: Some accommodations offer Wi-Fi, but it is typically satellite-based and limited to common areas. It is usually sufficient for sending text-based messages via WhatsApp but not for streaming or uploading high-resolution photos.
Preparation: We advise downloading offline maps, documents, and entertainment (music or podcasts) before the expedition begins.
