Iceland Photography Tour in Autumn: Snæfellsnes, Mývatn, Jökulsárlón and the South Coast

14 days / 13 nights photography journey in Iceland, tracing a route from Reykjavík through Snæfellsnes, Vatnsnes, Mývatn, Djúpivogur, Jökulsárlón and Vík í Mýrdal, with autumn light across the coast.

Overview

This 14-day, 13-night photography journey circles Iceland in autumn, beginning in Reykjavík and travelling through Snæfellsnes, Vatnsnes, Mývatn, Djúpivogur, Jökulsárlón and Vík before returning to Reykjavík. We keep a measured rhythm of coastal shoots, waterfall stops, geothermal areas, glacier lagoon, black beaches and aurora hunting under dark skies, with sightings never guaranteed.

We open with a welcome meeting and dinner in Reykjavík, then photograph Arnarstapi, Búðir church and Snæfellsjökull, Kirkjufell at sunset, Lóndrangur and guide-selected golden-hour locations. At Vatnsnes we watch for Icelandic horses and possible seals, and photograph Hvítserkur. The route continues past Goðafoss to Mývatn and Dimmuborgir, Námaskarð, Hverfell and the Mývatn Nature Baths, with days for Aldeyjarfoss and Hrafnabjargafoss, reached by off-road drive and trek, or by super jeep if conditions require.

Eastward, we visit Dettifoss and Rjúkandi on the way to Djúpivogur, then Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, with sunrise photography and further glacial sights around Vatnajökull. We photograph Vestrahorn from Stokksnes, then follow the South Coast via Reynisfjara, Vík, Dyrhólaey, Sólheimajökull, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, returning to Reykjavík for a final dinner. This tour suits photographers comfortable with off-road drives, treks, hikes, early starts and walks.

Autumn Around Iceland’s Full Circle

This 14-day journey follows Iceland’s ring from Reykjavík through Snæfellsnes, Vatnsnes, Mývatn, the Eastfjords, Jökulsárlón and the South Coast. Autumn brings lower light, changing weather and landscapes that shift from volcanic coast to open highlands and glacial lagoons.

The route is designed for photographers who enjoy working with atmosphere and variety, allowing time to respond to the conditions rather than chase a single fixed view.

Photogenic little villages line the shore, framed by mountains and fjords, with autumn colour all around. Continue to Lóndrangur, dramatic basalt plugs rising from the sea near the coast and an excellent photo subject. As the light softens, your photo guide selects a location for golden-hour photography, making the most of the warm sunset light. Breakfast is included before the day’s exploring.

The highlight is photographing Hvítserkur, a 15-metre basalt rock stack rising from the sea, said to resemble a drinking dragon or a troll turned to stone, captured from multiple angles and light conditions. The day closes with Northern Lights hunting under dark skies, following the aurora forecast, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Services to Expect

Hotels, Vehicles and Local Guidance

Accommodation is in comfortable hotels and guesthouses selected along the circular route. A private vehicle provides flexibility for photography stops, while local knowledge helps us understand access, timing and changing road conditions.

Services are organised around being outdoors: warm accommodation at night, practical transfers during the day and enough flexibility to make use of good light when it appears.

Practical Information

Wind, Light and Changing Weather

Icelandic weather can change quickly, with wind, rain, cloud and brief clear light arriving in the same day. Autumn days are shorter, and the quality of light may be subtle rather than dramatic.

Dress in layers, protect equipment and remain flexible. The best photographs often come from working patiently with the weather that is actually present.

Road Conditions and Daily Rhythm

The route covers long distances around Iceland, with frequent stops for landscapes, coastlines, waterfalls and changing light. Roads can be exposed or slow, and conditions may affect the order or duration of visits.

Expect early starts on some days and a rhythm that balances driving with time outdoors. The itinerary remains responsive to weather, access and the group’s energy.

Patient Photography in Iceland

Iceland rewards attention to shape, texture, movement and atmosphere. Give a landscape time to change, watch the edges of cloud and water, and remain open to quieter images beyond the familiar viewpoints.

Follow safety guidance near cliffs, beaches, rivers and glaciers. Respect marked paths and other visitors so that photography remains compatible with the protection of Iceland’s fragile places.

Camera Gear for Iceland

Bring the camera setup you are comfortable carrying for a full day, with spare batteries and enough memory for repeated photography stops. A wide or standard lens suits the scale of Iceland’s landscapes, while a telephoto can help with distant subjects and details.

Protect your equipment from wind, rain and changing conditions, and keep a lens cloth accessible. The most useful kit is the one you can carry easily while walking and working at the available light.

Detailed Trip Notes, including practical tips, cultural insights, and a complete packing list will be sent to you 60 days before departure.

Booking this tour means you agree to our full Terms and Conditions. Below is a summary of the key points. As life is unpredictable, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance.

  • Deposit: A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking. This deposit is refundable for 7 days (less transaction fees), after which it becomes a non-refundable credit, transferable to a future tour offered by Remote Expeditions within 4 years of the cancellation date, less any non-recoverable costs already paid on your behalf.
  • Final Payment: The remaining balance is due 90 days before the tour begins.
  • Cancellation more than 90 days before departure: You will receive a full refund of any payments made, except for the 30% deposit. Your deposit will be converted into a travel credit valid for 4 years on a future tour Remote Expeditions.

* This is a summary only. Please read our complete Terms and Conditions for full details before booking.

Travel at a human pace

The difference is in the details

Journeys shaped by experience

Every route is built from time spent in the field: knowing when to linger, when to move on, and which small details are worth noticing.

Room for the unexpected

The best moments are not always on the itinerary. We leave enough flexibility to follow a good conversation, an unusual sighting, or a changing landscape.

Local relationships that open doors

Our journeys are grounded in long-term relationships with people who know their home intimately and are proud to share it in their own way.

A small group, properly looked after

With only a few travellers, decisions remain personal. We can adapt the pace, answer questions, and make sure everyone feels part of the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Remote Expeditions journeys are arranged privately, so the pace and rhythm can be shaped around the people travelling together. When a scheduled group departure is offered, it is typically limited to four or five travellers.

No. Photography is one of the ways we observe and connect with a place, but it is not a requirement. Our journeys also welcome travellers drawn to slow travel, wildlife, culture, trekking, landscapes, and genuine encounters. You can join with professional equipment, a simple camera, or just your curiosity.

Every itinerary has its own rhythm. Some journeys are gently paced, while others include long walks, trekking, uneven terrain, altitude, or substantial travel days. The practical details on each tour page explain the expected walking, terrain, altitude, distances, and overall physical level so you can decide whether the journey suits you.

Tristan designs the itineraries and personally leads many Remote Expeditions journeys. Depending on the destination and the character of the trip, trusted local guides, drivers, cultural hosts, or specialist leaders may also join part of the route. This combination gives you direct personal support alongside local knowledge.

Often, yes. Private journeys can usually be shaped around your interests, pace, and available time. Fixed group departures have a defined route and dates, but it may still be possible to arrange additional nights, private extensions, or other travel before or after the main journey.
