Trail Snacks & Lunch: You will receive a daily ration of trail snacks (nuts, dried fruits, chocolates). Lunch is either a hot, sit-down meal served mid-day at a scenic spot, or a packed lunch on days with longer pass crossings.
Afternoon Tea: Upon arriving at our campsite, a spread of hot drinks and snacks (such as popcorn, crackers, and biscuits) will be waiting to help you rehydrate and warm up before the golden hour shoot.

While the muleteers and their pack animals transport the heavy camp infrastructure and your main luggage between campsites, our guides ensure your safety and help position you at the best vantage points for golden hour. Please note that porters are not typically used for personal daypacks on this route; the support team focuses on camp operations and group logistics.

Luggage Allowances & Weight Limits

During the trek, your main gear is transported by pack horses and donkeys. We provide a heavy-duty, weather-resistant duffel bag for this purpose during your pre-trek briefing in Huaraz.

Personal Gear Limit: Your checked duffel bag must not exceed 15 kg (33 lbs). This limit is strictly enforced for the welfare of the pack animals. This capacity is more than sufficient for your sleeping bag, mattress, clothing layers, and toiletries.
Daily Daypack: You will carry your own daypack (typically 30 to 45 liters) containing your daily essentials, water, trail snacks, waterproof layers, and your camera gear.

How Photo Equipment is Carried

Hands and Head: Pack a warm, windproof beanie that covers your ears, along with a two-glove system: lightweight liner gloves (essential for operating camera gear) and heavy, insulated gloves to wear over them.
Sun Protection: The equatorial alpine sun is exceptionally strong. You must bring a wide-brimmed sun hat, high-quality polarized sunglasses, and broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm.

Layering for the Andes

This tour takes you from high Andean plains down into humid cloud forest, often in the same day. The key to comfort is a flexible layering system. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (merino wool or synthetic). Add a fleece or lightweight down jacket for warmth, and top it with a windproof and waterproof outer shell. You will be peeling layers on and off frequently as you change elevation or step into the sun.

Rain Gear is Non-Negotiable

The cloud forests on this route are called “cloud” forests for a reason. Expect frequent drizzle and sudden downpours, especially in the afternoon. A reliable, breathable rain jacket is essential. Waterproof pants are strongly recommended for early morning birding walks when the vegetation is soaking wet. An umbrella can be a helpful supplement for camera gear, but it will not replace your jacket.

Sun Protection at Altitude

UV radiation is intense in the Peruvian highlands, even on overcast days. You will burn faster here than at sea level. Pack a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply it throughout the day. A wide-brimmed hat and quality UV-blocking sunglasses are mandatory, not optional. Lip balm with SPF is a small item that makes a big difference.

Luggage for Internal Flights and Rough Roads

Internal flights in Peru have strict weight limits (often 15-20 kg / 33-44 lbs total) and rough dirt roads mean your bag will be tossed around. A soft-sided duffel bag (not a hard-shell suitcase) is the best choice. It is easier to pack into small vehicle trunks and less likely to break. Bring your birding gear and essentials in a daypack. We recommend packing your main bag so you can live out of your daypack for 2-3 days if your luggage is delayed.

Main bag: A 60-70 liter soft duffel or backpack.
Daypack: A 20-30 liter pack for binoculars, camera, water, layers, and rain gear.
Dry bags: Use compression dry bags inside your duffel to keep clothes and electronics safe from moisture and to save space.

Excellent Travel & Photography Guide

Tristan created a wonderful cultural experience for us over a 10 day visit to Cuba. From a photography perspective, he had researched people and locations to insure the best model, in the most cuban environment in the best light. Although we were focused on photography, he rounded out the tour with opportunities to experience the history (visit to old sugar plantation), the land (visit to a farm with oxen and a hike to waterfall), and the food (experiencing local food and drink in beautiful settings).
