Ecological walk following the stream of the river. We pass by the site where the old village of Gungulaja was located, we can observe traditional plantations and some wax palms. Back to the village to discover a little more of the life of the Koguis, to observe their way of life and exchange with them. Local lunch followed by a quiet time during the hot hours. In the afternoon, we will discover the secrets of the preparation of the Fique, natural fiber used for the manufacture of Mochilas. After having observed, if it is discovered, an absolutely magnificent sky, free of any light pollution, dinner and second night in our hut.

Our itinerary includes internal flights to seamlessly connect key destinations. While these flights are fully arranged for you, domestic airlines in Colombia enforce stricter baggage limits than international carriers. To avoid extra fees at the airport, please keep these limits in mind when packing:

Carry-on Baggage: One small cabin bag up to 10 kg (22 lbs), plus a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you.

Road Conditions and Comfort

For ground transfers and day excursions, we travel in private, air-conditioned vehicles sized appropriately for our group. While highways between major cities are paved and well-maintained, mountain routes can be exceptionally winding with frequent altitude changes. The Lagoons are Sanctuaries, Not Swimming Pools: The sacred lagoons are the spiritual heart of the mountains. They are considered the origin of life, places of immense power, and sites for offerings and spiritual cleansing by the Mamos (spiritual leaders). Therefore, swimming, bathing, or even wading in the lagoons is strictly and unequivocally forbidden. To do so would be a profound act of desecration.
A Clean State of Mind: The indigenous concept of ‘entering a sacred place’ extends beyond physical actions to include one’s mental and spiritual state. You are asked to approach these sites with a calm, positive, and respectful mindset. The belief is that the energy you bring with you can affect the place itself. Leave behind anger, stress, and negative thoughts. Be present, be mindful, and tread with a quiet heart.
Leave No Trace, Take Only Memories: This universal principle is elevated to a spiritual level here.
- Nothing Left Behind: All waste, without a single exception (including organic matter like fruit peels), must be packed out.
- Nothing Taken Away: Do not pick flowers, disturb plants, move stones, or take any “souvenirs” from the natural environment. You are a silent observer, leaving the land exactly as you found it, as a sign of respect for its sacred integrity.
Follow Your Guide’s Lead: Your indigenous guide is not just a navigator; they are your cultural interpreter and a steward of this land. They will show you where it is appropriate to walk, to rest, and to observe. There may be places where you are asked not to take photographs or to remain silent. Adhering to their guidance is the ultimate sign of respect for their culture and their ancestral territory.

Meeting with the indigenous

Some of us have high expectations of meeting local people, especially when it comes to native communities such as the Kogi Native Americans. It is our duty to prepare travelers for this meeting so as not to generate misunderstandings and frustrations.

The Kogis are not professionals in the tourism or hotel business. They accept to welcome us because we come to explore their territory and we ask them to supervise our hikes.

On these occasions, they receive us as guests and the community treats us with attention. The Kogis assume their role as hosts but sometimes we may not be their first priority. As in any society, community life is full of unexpected events. A family event, a visit, a spiritual gathering or many other reasons may result in the absence of one of the members of the village or focus the attention of the community elsewhere.

The exchanges with the Kogis are frank and honest and this is the best proof of respect they can give us. The Kogis don’t speak English. Your guide knows the codes of the community, so listen carefully. He will know how to build an interesting dialogue and tackle subjects that will arise spontaneously. Spanish speaking travelers will have the chance to exchange directly with the villagers and will enrich the meeting.

In general, whether it is at the Kogi’s, or other groups, the meetings organized at the inhabitant’s home are not a commercial service like a taxi ride or a night in a hotel. They depend on the willingness of hosts and visitors to share and be attentive. We always choose to collaborate with welcoming and relevant initiatives and the experience is new and fresh with each trip.

Expect sudden stops, overtaking on curves, and a general lack of strict traffic enforcement. This is not chaos—it is a local system of communication and negotiation. Your driver will be experienced with these conditions, and your job is to relax and embrace the ride as part of the adventure.

What This Means for Your Trip

This is not a tour for nervous passengers. If you are prone to motion sickness or anxiety in fast, unpredictable traffic, plan ahead with medication or a front seat. The driving style is a cultural immersion—expect to hear the horn used as a greeting, a warning, and a friendly “I’m here.” It adds a layer of energy and authenticity to your journey. You will arrive at each destination with stories, not just photos.

Keeping Your Devices Charged

Colombia uses Type A and Type B electrical outlets with a standard voltage of 110V and a frequency of 60Hz. This is the exact same system used in the United States and Canada, meaning North American travelers will not need any adapters or voltage converters.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

If this applies to your tour, you must receive the vaccine at least 10 days prior to arrival and carry your physical International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow card) with you.

Recommended Training Regimen: To prepare, we strongly recommend you begin a dedicated training program at least 2-3 months prior to departure. Your focus should be on building cardiovascular endurance and leg strength.
- The Best Practice: The ideal training is to hike regularly on hilly or mountainous terrain, for several hours at a time, while carrying a daypack with weight (5-7 kg / 10-15 lbs).
- Gym & Home Alternatives: Supplement your hiking with activities like running, cycling, and using a Stairmaster or elliptical machine. Incorporate strength training, especially squats, lunges, and core exercises, which are vital for stability and preventing injury on steep descents.
Break In Your Gear: Your training is the perfect time to break in your waterproof hiking boots. Arriving with new, untested boots is the surest way to get blisters and compromise your trek. This is also a good opportunity to test the socks, daypack, and clothing you plan to bring.

A high level of fitness will allow you to move beyond the physical effort and fully immerse yourself in the incredible landscapes and profound cultural experience of visiting the indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada.
