Overview

On this six-day journey we take you between two Colombian Caribbean islands, from San Andrés to Providencia’s slower island rhythm. This is San Andrés and Providencia island hopping for travellers who want flexible days, with space for beaches, island landscapes, water, and local culture.

We begin in San Andrés with a local transfer from the airport, time along the Malecón and a swim, and the option to explore the island’s 19-mile ring road by golf cart or moped. A short inter-island flight brings us to Providencia, where we stay near Southwest Bay. Days open up with unhurried walks, the sands of Bahía Suroeste, Bahía Aguadulce and Bahía Manzanillo, and optional excursions such as diving at El Planchón, snorkeling in Old Providence and McBean Lagoon National Park, canoeing around Maracaibo, and hikes to Fort Warwick or Pico Natural Regional Park.

Providencia also offers an optional introduction to Raizal heritage, with a visit to Casa Museo Isleña, a church service featuring live music and singing, and, on Saturday afternoons, the island’s horseback races on Southwest Bay’s sands. We return to San Andrés for a final Caribbean sunset before a departure transfer the next morning. Throughout, every activity is optional, so the journey can match your energy and curiosity.

DAY 1

San Andrés

    A private vehicle transfer between San Andrés airport and the accommodation on the island.

  • San Andrés Malecón and beach swimming

    San Andrés life centres on the Malecón, the shorefront boulevard of the island's only town, on the north shore. It is an easy place to swim in clear water, eat creole food and stay out for live music and reggae in the evening.

  • Optional San Andrés 19-mile ring road

    A single 19-mile road circles San Andrés, and renting a golf cart or moped is the usual way to travel it. The loop links the island's beaches and viewpoints at your own pace, and rental is arranged locally rather than included.

DAY 2

Providencia / Southwest Bay

  • Flight San Andrés Island --> Providencia Island

    A short inter-island flight links San Andrés with neighbouring Providencia, a crossing of about twenty minutes.

    A transfer takes you from Providencia's airport to the accommodation near Southwest Bay, roughly twenty minutes away.

  • Providencia free walking and relaxation

    Settle into Providencia's unhurried island rhythm around Southwest Bay. Much more traditional than San Andrés, the island limits buildings to two storeys and requires local construction styles, so vegetation, wildlife, secluded beaches and quiet inlets still define the landscape. Wandering the bay's lanes is the simplest way to absorb the pace of the Raizal community.

  • Optional Fort Warwick hike

    Walk uphill from the small town of Santa Isabel to Fort Warwick. The short climb is the easiest way to add a hilltop view of Providencia's coast to a Southwest Bay stay, and the fort's remains sit above the traditional settlement.

  • Optional Saturday Southwest Bay horseback races

    On Saturday afternoons, islanders race horses along the sands of Southwest Bay. The event is a long-standing local tradition rather than a staged show, so it depends on the day of the week and the island's own calendar.

DAY 3

Providencia water and beaches

  • Bahía Suroeste beach

    Providencia's beaches are the island's main draw inland from the reef. Bahía Suroeste, at the island's hub, is the most convenient base for swimming in clear Caribbean water.

  • Bahía Aguadulce beach

    Bahía Aguadulce pairs calm, clear water with an easy shoreline, making it a straightforward beach stop within a short island drive of Southwest Bay.

  • Bahía Manzanillo beach

    Bahía Manzanillo is the quietest of Providencia's main beaches, with shallow turquoise water and shade along the shore, well suited to an unhurried afternoon.

  • Optional Providencia diving at El Planchón

    Providencia is known for its reef diving, and most dive sites lie within about ten minutes of Southwest Bay. The highlight is El Planchón, where a German shipwreck lies in clear water among reef life. Certification requirements and dive operators are arranged locally.

  • Optional Old Providence and McBean Lagoon snorkeling

    Snorkel the mangroves, turquoise lagoons and reef shallows of Old Providence and McBean Lagoon National Park. The park protects a portion of the world's third-largest barrier reef and holds abundant marine life, which makes it the island's best snorkelling from the surface.

  • Optional Maracaibo canoeing

    Paddle a canoe through the calm water around Maracaibo, a small hamlet on Providencia's sheltered shore. Canoes are hired locally and the flat conditions suit an easy self-guided outing.

DAY 4

Pico and island culture

  • Optional Pico Natural Regional Park hike

    Hike to Pico Natural Regional Park, Providencia's high point, for an exceptional view across the Caribbean. Walking it in the morning leaves the rest of the day for the beach.

    Keep time after the Pico hike for a beach stop, when conditions and energy allow. The island's main beaches are a short drive from the trailhead.
