A 20-day birding journey from Lima's coastal wetlands over the Andes and down the Manu Road into the Amazon lowlands, ending at Puerto Maldonado. Cloud forest at Wayquecha Station and Ajanaco Pass, mixed flocks along the Manu Road, the Cock of the Rock lek, Amazonia Lodge feeders, Pantiacolla's bamboo and terra firme forests, and three days at Manu Wildlife Center on the Macaw Clay Lick, the Canopy Tower and Cocha Blanco Lake.

The day's road transport runs from Cusco to Huacarpay Lake and on to Wayquecha Station, climbing out of the Cusco valley toward the Manu Road cloud forest. On this tour the road itself is one of the habitats — the drive is shared with the day's birding.

Road Transfers, River Travel and Lodges
This is a supported expedition with long road journeys, 4WD sections, river transfers and stays at lodges chosen for access to the forest. Travel times can change with road, river and weather conditions.
Local guides and lodge teams contribute essential knowledge of calls, trails, hides, clay licks and forest behaviour. Their experience helps us work safely and adapt the day when conditions change.
Practical Information
Elevation, Heat and Early Starts
The journey begins in cool, high-elevation habitats and descends into warm, humid Amazon forest. Early starts are important for bird activity, while temperatures, humidity and walking conditions change substantially along the route.
Rest between outings, drink regularly and follow the guide’s pace. Flexible timing helps us make the most of weather, road conditions and wildlife activity.
Field Conditions from Cloud Forest to Lowlands
Expect a mixture of roadside birding, forest trails, feeders, hides, canopy viewpoints and boat-based exploration. Some days are comfortable and settled; others involve mud, humidity, uneven ground or long periods of quiet observation.
Wildlife sightings remain conditional. The value of the route lies in giving each habitat time, from mixed flocks in the cloud forest to macaws, mammals and river-edge species in the lowlands.
Patient, Ethical Wildlife Watching
Forest and river wildlife is observed on its own terms. Follow the guide’s instructions, keep a respectful distance, avoid disturbing animals and remain quiet around hides, clay licks and nesting areas.
Local communities and lodge teams make this journey possible. Ask before photographing people, respect their advice and leave each trail, riverbank and forest observation point as we found it.
What to Pack for Peru’s Andes and Amazon
Bring breathable field clothing, warm layers for high elevations, comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, insect protection and a small daypack. Binoculars, spare batteries, memory cards and a weather-protection system for cameras are essential.
Keep medication, valuables and a change of clothes accessible during road and river transfers. A dry bag helps protect equipment and personal essentials in humid forest and on boats.

- Deposit: A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking. This deposit is refundable for 7 days (less transaction fees), after which it becomes a non-refundable credit, transferable to a future tour offered by Remote Expeditions within 4 years of the cancellation date, less any non-recoverable costs already paid on your behalf.
- Final Payment: The remaining balance is due 90 days before the tour begins.
- Cancellation more than 90 days before departure: You will receive a full refund of any payments made, except for the 30% deposit. Your deposit will be converted into a travel credit valid for 4 years on a future tour Remote Expeditions.
- Cancellation within 90 days of departure: 100% of the tour price is forfeited. There are no refunds or credits.

No. Photography is one of the ways we observe and connect with a place, but it is not a requirement. Our journeys also welcome travellers drawn to slow travel, wildlife, culture, trekking, landscapes, and genuine encounters. You can join with professional equipment, a simple camera, or just your curiosity.
Every itinerary has its own rhythm. Some journeys are gently paced, while others include long walks, trekking, uneven terrain, altitude, or substantial travel days. The practical details on each tour page explain the expected walking, terrain, altitude, distances, and overall physical level so you can decide whether the journey suits you.
Tristan designs the itineraries and personally leads many Remote Expeditions journeys. Depending on the destination and the character of the trip, trusted local guides, drivers, cultural hosts, or specialist leaders may also join part of the route. This combination gives you direct personal support alongside local knowledge.
Often, yes. Private journeys can usually be shaped around your interests, pace, and available time. Fixed group departures have a defined route and dates, but it may still be possible to arrange additional nights, private extensions, or other travel before or after the main journey.
